Get to Know Lorie Smith

Lorie Morris Smith was born in Waynesboro, Virginia and grew up on Edward Avenue in the neighborhood of Wayne Hills. Lorie’s mom worked in the factory at Genicom and her dad was a Streets Supervisor for the City of Waynesboro. Her parents taught her the value of hard work and saving money for a rainy day.

During her years as a student in the Waynesboro public school system, Lorie attended Rosenwald Elementary, Kate Collins Jr. High, and Waynesboro High School.  She later attended Blue Ridge Community College while holding down a full time job.

While working at Genicom Corporation, Lorie gained invaluable hands-on experience. She began her career in the Treasury Department where she was responsible for international currency evaluation and funds transfers. Lorie was later promoted to a position in the CEO and CFO's offices. In this role, Lorie managed all aspects of the corporate office and was responsible for oversight of international offices. Lorie worked closely with Genicom executives, in addition to managing all shareholder relations matters.

As many folks know, Lorie is married to Robert Smith (better known as “Bert”). Bert is a longtime employee of the City of Waynesboro, as well as a talented woodturner. The high school sweethearts have been married for 28 years and have two children; Kyle, 26 and Lauren, 21.

As a lifelong resident of Waynesboro, Lorie has a deep understanding of the city’s values, culture, and history. Like the majority of Waynesboro residents, she works hard and appreciates the quality of small-town life. Lorie often states, “I don't stay in Waynesboro because I have to. I stay and serve in Waynesboro because I want to.”

Giving back to the Waynesboro community has been a constant in Lorie’s life. Her dedication to volunteerism and public service is evident in her busy calendar. Lorie is particularly passionate about community services and support for persons with disabilities. As the mother of a disabled child, Lorie can personally relate to the joys and challenges of caregiving for loved ones with special needs.

In addition to civic involvement, Lorie enjoys gardening, reading and fishing with Bert.
